Firostefani & Fira

The villages of Firostefani and Fira, are celebrated all over the world for perfect picture images of bright, whitewashed houses against the eternal blue of the Aegean Sea, quaint narrow alleyways and gloriously simplistic churches overlooking the magical Caldera.”
“Fira is the capital of the island, and is considered to be the epicenter of Santorini’s commercial and entertainment activities. Firostefani, located on a higher Caldera part next to Fira, is known for its serene and relaxing environment, making it ideal for those who want to spend their holiday in a tranquil setting, but still have access to the main tourist attractions.

Santorini Beaches

Santorini is the ideal place for relaxing in the sun. Whilst residing at Mill Houses Studios & Suites in Firostefani - Fira, you can spend endless hours by the pool, admiring the magnificent view, or indeed, use it as a base and set out to visit the beautiful beaches of our island.

Along the eastern coast of the island are the grey and black beaches of Monolithos, Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios, all of which are extremely popular and offer a wide variety of facilities, such as snack bars, taverns, restaurants, mini-markets, kiosks, beach bars, water sports facilities, etc. Near the prehistoric archaeological site of Akrotiri are the Red and White beaches, named after the majestic, red and white rock cliffs that surround them. Other Santorini beaches, including Armeni, Ammoudi, Vourvoulos, Paradissos, and Baxedes are also lovely and offer enjoyable swimming and sunbathing. A good map of Santorini can show you how to get to each beach and by which means of transportation.

Sightseeing & Attractions

Santorini is an island rife with ancient sites, traditional churches, historical monuments, charming villages and beautiful beaches. Simply equip yourself with a map of Santorini and set off on your holiday adventure!

Ancient Thira is a must on your touring schedule. Located on the lower eastern part of a hill between the villages of Kamari and Perissa, it offers visitors a glimpse of life on Santorini during antiquity. In Ancient Thira, you can admire the ancient ruins of a gymnasium, a stoa, military barracks, an agora, a theater and its sanctuaries. During the 17th century BC, a terrible volcanic eruption took place on the island, changing its shape, plunging a huge part of the island down the abyss and burying a large portion of it beneath lava and ash. More than 3.500 thousand years later, in 1967 to be exact, Professor Spyros Marinatos began excavations in the area of Akrotiri, uncovering an entire prehistoric settlement that dates back to the 5th millennium BC. The site reveals multi-leveled houses, roads, storage rooms, stairs, and a very sophisticated ancient sewage system. Before visiting, remember to enquire if the site is open at the reception desk of Mill Houses Studios & Suites, as Akrotiri archaeological site continuously undergoes repairs and restoration work by teams of archaeologists.

In Fira, we recommend strolling through the town to get a taste of genuine Santorini, and visiting the Gizi Manor, currently operating as the Cultural Centre of the island. The Bellonio Center with its library that includes 18th and 19th century books and manuscripts, the Church of Ippapanti Sotiros, the Church of Agios Ioannis Baptistis, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Archaeological and Folklore Museums, are all of notable interest. Touring the other villages of Santorini, you can visit the Maritime Museum in Oia, the lovely churches of Eisodon Panagia in Megalochori, Panagia in Emporeio, Panagia Katefiani in Perissa, Agios Georgios in Imerovigli, Theotokaki in Pyrgos, and the wonderful wineries in Vothonas, Pyrgos, and Megalochori.

One of the best and most popular touring activities on Santorini is a short boat trip to the volcanic islets that are located opposite Firostefani and Fira, at the center of the volcanic bay, surrounded by the Caldera; Nea Kammeni with the craters and Palea Kammeni right next to it, forming a small channel in between the two, with the famous Hot Springs. Thirassia stands on the opposite side of the volcanic bay, perpetual neighbor of Santorini (Thira) and irrefutable evidence of what used to be a bigger, round island, hence one of Santorini’s ancient names “Stroggyli” (round).
